Job Overview:
This position is responsible for assisting and performing any requested structural design and bridge inspection tasks, while working as part of a team on small to medium scale projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide basic structural design services, bridge inspection services, and engineering support in response to department needs
- Assist in the development of design plans, and supporting materials
- Prepare hydrologic calculations (Stream Gauge Analysis, Rational Method, Regression methods), hydraulic models (HY-8, HEC-RAS), PSLRFD, STLRFD, and BXLRFD designs, quantities, cost estimates, QA forms, submittal letters, preliminary substructure designs (ABLRFD), geometry (Cogo-PC), deck elevations, and review simpler submissions (e.g., railings, fences, SIP forms, scuppers and expansion dams)
- Conduct structural inspections of all structure types
- Develop reports, calculations, and drawings for projects
- Prepare structural design calculations, structural analyses, & bridge load ratings
- Develop inspection reports using iForms, BMS2, and National Bridge Elements (NBE), etc
- Assist more senior staff in carrying out tasks
- Demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply knowledge of industry codes, standards, and computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
- Check the work of the experienced PEs to gain insight into the engineering process
- Demonstrate active participation and some contribution in department/project meetings
- Able to be led under the direct supervision of an experienced/senior PE
- Able to complete work independently
- Weekly timesheet completion (with appropriate notes/codes)
- Contribute to the overall success of the company by supporting internal departments, providing exemplary service to clients, and striving to meet on-going initiatives to grow and develop the company
Non-Essential Duties
- Assist with structural design and bridge inspection work for other departments
- Participate in professional engineering society conferences
- Contribute and serve on an engineering committee and/or subcommittee
- Participate in research and development opportunities and projects
- Support internal departments with structures design services required to execute projects
- Advise management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, client relations, and/or inter-departmental relations

System or Specialized Knowledge:
To perform this job successfully, an individual might have knowledge of:
- PennDOT Programs, and ECMS and BMS2 Systems
- PennDOT Bridge Inspection and Load Rating Analysis Policies and Procedures
- Advanced Analysis Software (STAAD)
- AutoCAD/MicroStation (preferred, not required)
- PennDOT Standard Drawings
- Inspection Access Equipment Capabilities and Common Traffic Control Patterns

Qualifications:
- Years of Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years experience in the engineering field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Education: BA or BS Degree required
- Degree or Formal Training: Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- License, Certificate, or Registration: EIT and CBSI is required; Must meet criteria as defined by NBIS
