Job Overview: 

This position is responsible for assisting and performing any requested structural design and bridge inspection tasks, while working as part of a team on small to medium scale projects.

Key Responsibilities: 

Essential Duties

  • Provide basic structural design services, bridge inspection services, and engineering support in response to department needs
  • Assist in the development of design plans, and supporting materials
    • Check hydrologic calculations (Stream Gauge Analysis, Rational Method, Regression methods), hydraulic models (HY-8, HEC-RAS), PSLRFD, STLRFD, and BXLRFD designs, quantities, cost estimates, QA forms, submittal letters, preliminary substructure designs (ABLRFD), geometry (Cogo-PC), deck elevations, and review simpler submissions (e.g., railings, fences, SIP forms, scuppers and expansion dams)
  • Conduct structural inspections of all structure types
  • Understand and establish competency with structural design calculations, structural analyses, and bridge load ratings
  • Prepare inspection reports using iForms, BMS2, and National Bridge Elements (NBE), etc
  • Demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply knowledge of industry codes, standards, and computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
  • Check the work of the experienced PEs to gain insight into the engineering process
  • Able to be led under the direct supervision of an experienced/senior PE
  • Weekly timesheet completion (with appropriate notes/codes)
  • Contribute to the overall success of the company by supporting internal departments, providing exemplary service to clients, and striving to meet on-going initiatives to grow and develop the company

Non-Essential Duties

  • Assist with structural design and bridge inspection work for other departments
  • Participate in professional engineering society conferences
  • Contribute and serve on an engineering committee and/or subcommittee
  • Participate in research and development opportunities and projects
  • Support internal departments with structures design services required to execute projects
  • Advise management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, client relations, and/or inter-departmental relations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Provide bridge engineering services in response to department needs
  • Develop reports, calculations, and drawings for projects
  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of industry codes, standards, and assist with design using CADD and other design software
  •  Conduct structural inspections of all structure types
  • Prepare and demonstrate proficiency and competency with structural design calculations, structural analyses, and bridge load ratings; the ability to use advanced analysis software preferred, not required
  • Demonstrate proficiency in preparing inspection reports using iForms, BMS2, and National Bridge Elements (NBE), etc
  • Conduct condition assessments of existing structures and prepares reports
  • May provide quality oversight (QA/QC review) for bridge inspection and/or structural engineering work performed by others
  • Assist more senior staff in carrying out complex tasks
  • Ability to express both technical and non-technical issues and ideas clearly
  • Demonstrate time management and staying on budget
  • Complete tasks with little to no revisions
  • Maintain billability percentage set by supervisor/leadership
  • Supports internal departments with bridge inspection and structural services required to execute projects

Qualifications: 

  • Years of Experience: Minimum of >1 year experience in the engineering field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Education: BA or BS Degree required
  • Degree or Formal Training: Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • License, Certificate or Registration: Plan to take the FE exam
